The Hip Hop gods smiled down on us when MF Doom & Madlib created their hip-hop union. As a group, Madvillain released their debut album, 'Madvillainy,' 13 years ago today (3/23/04). Nicknames, pseudonyms, alter-egos, monikers - just all around mysterious shit - circles both Doom & Madlib. I'd be lying to say I'm stage 5 clinger type fan and know all their aliases or catalog, but I do thank my time at Fat Beats for putting their music in rotation at the store and also subjecting me to a ton of Madlib instrumental projects. I was a fan of KMD, but I credit Fat Beats for sparking new interest and I was mildly humored to learn that they were functional mutes like I am, lol. I read Madlib once described this album as "our imaginary crews coming together." That's genius! The interview above is from December 2004 in Spin Magazine - it's just after both 'Madvillainy' and 'MM..Food' were released, but I think it's a solid (and relevant) read. Now, let me step aside and introduce you to my homie, Justin Hunte, who did a terrific video blog discussing MF Doom.
