After decades in the game, it's safe to say that legendary D.I.T.C. member O.C., alongside East New York DJ and producer PF Cuttin of Blahzay Blahzay, have always been consistent with delivering classic material to the masses. O.C. and PF Cuttin have finally decided to get together to drop a collaborative project entitled “Opium.” The 9-track banger will bring you back in time to the era of block parties and of stunts, blunts and hip-hop; to remind you what the good old days sounded like. Donkey Sean Jr. served as a prelude to Sean Price’s first solo album Monkey Barz. It was released in 2003 through Duck Down Records and is mixed by producer/DJ, PF Cuttin. The title of the album is a play on words referencing the 1982 arcade-style video game Donkey Kong Jr. The track “Jail Shit” was later featured on Monkey Barz. The 5 Deadly Venoms of Brooklyn is a mixtape created by five classic New York City DJs: P.F. Cuttin, Mister Cee, Tony Touch, DJ Premier and DJ Evil Dee. The mixtape was recorded in 1997 and released by Tape Kingz on cassette tape. The name of the album is a reference to a well-known Kung-Fu movie, "Five Deadly Venoms." The mixtape consists of tracks from Breez Evahflowin, KRS-One, Kool G Rap, Mobb Deep, Q-Tip, Shadez Of Brooklyn, Ak Skills, The Notorious B.I.G., Sunz Of Man, Jeru The Damaja, Guru, Camp Lo, Verbal Hoods, Channel Live, and many more. 5 Deadly Venoms of Brooklyn is widely considered one of the greatest hip-hop mixtapes ever created. Included in the album are the original "Danger," "Danger-Part 2," with Smoothe and brother Trigga, and their current single, "Pain I Feel." The rest of the album delivers the goods and builds upon the promise of these joints. "Pain..." is a standout track and could be the third entry in a trilogy - begun with Jeru's "Come Clean" and OC's "Time's Up" - dedicated to exposing the phantasmic content of a large segment of hip-hop and to refining lyrical skills. Likewise, "Don't Let This Rap Shit Fool You" and "Posse Jumpa" are verbal jabs at hip-hop pretenders and reminders to those MCs and crews in the industry who don't know the ledge. "Long Winded" employs the time-proven tactics of looping one's own words and creating one's own vocabulary. That track, along with "Jackpot" and the title cut, serve as a declaration of the Blahzay sound. Blah, Blah, Blah is a refreshing, no-nonsense product which delivers exactly what it promises: beats and lyrics without relying on catchy hooks, posse cuts or shock value parading as "reality." "Blahzay's Outloud opens things up in his strident, straightforward baritone. "Medina animals eat you like purina / Cat chow I never bow still I aim to please / Drain what you got as if I was your main squeeze / Wack MCs ease / The end is here at last / Jet real fast with your tail between your ass." But it's the presence of Smoothe and Trigga that significantly ups the lyrical ante on this joint, particularly Trigga, who delivers a razor sharp piece of vocal ass-whip: "The misdemeanor / dreamer / money schemer / slip the clip in the infrared beamer." Blahzay Blahzay is the Brooklyn duo of PF Cuttin (producer/DJ) & Outloud (MC). Their underground smash "Danger" was a huge success from their debut album in '96, "Blah Blah Blah." The single was featured by The Source as one of their Sure Shot Singles in November, 1995. "After Jeru The Damaja dropped "Come Clean," he began to cast a long shadow over hip-hop music. To wack MCs, he is a physical embodiment of the music's conscience. Few in hip-hop can deny that Tha Damaja has the verbal gymnastics to move a crowd, which may explain why Brooklyn neighbors Blahzay Blahzay wisely count him among their influences and present their take on what may fast become the "East (New York)" sound." "Blahzay's baritone Outloud takes it to the streets of Brooklyn with a multi-part warning of trife endeavors: rowdy teens spit razors, shoes are stolen, crackheads go all out for lucci and gunfights are daily operation. "Danger" pushes the point that modern hip-hop itself is in "danger" of respecting gun violence over lyrical skills. Rousing and powerful, "Danger" offers a more grassroots alternative to the odious ilk currently dragging a once respectable art form away from it's time-honored roots. Production wise PF Cuttin's track captures the essence of simplicity that make various records from the 1980s perfectly enjoyable today in the 90s: loud insistent drums uncluttered by unnecessary instrumentation. This is the first posthumous release of Sean Price. The plan was to release the mixtape on August 21st, 2015. He passed away on August 8th, 2015 but the mixtape was still released as planned. The iTunes release only has 8 songs but the digital download as well as the physical CD from Duck Down contains 30 songs. The title is a play on Stevie Wonder’s 1976 Motown classic Songs in the the Key of Life. The original artwork (not featured above) also mirrored Stevie Wonder’s classic. #riP!
